A charming encounter, thanks for sharing.

Many moons ago, I was greeted by the owner of a country house b&b, in aristocratic uniform red trousers, with the unforgettable words, "Mrs Saddam Hussein will come and help you in a moment". He was delightfully self-aware, funny and irascible. His wife was, of course, a model of hospitality.

It's good to know that the Basil Fawlty archetype is still flourishing in modern Britain.

I grew up in Harrogate - just a couple of miles away - and know Knaresborough well. This really made me laugh. I can hear every word. There’s a very type of Fawlty-Towers furious Yorkshireman and, you, er, met him. Yorkshire rudeness, like Yorkshire friendliness, is a breed apart. Don’t forget - you can always tell a Yorkshireman. You just can’t tell him much.
